Wanna Quit Smoking?

With the effective date of the Smoke Free Ontario Act quickly approaching on May 31, 2006, there has never been a better time to considering quitting for the 23% of current smokers in the Windsor-Essex County area. Approximately 23% of these current smokers are planning to quit within the next 30 days while 42% are planning to quit to quit in the next six months. Quitting is the single most important change that you can make to improve your health and the health of your family. It has been reported that within 10 years of quitting, the risk of lung cancer drops to approximately half of that of a smoker. Within 15 years of quitting, the risk drops to almost the same as those who have never smoked.
As the main pubic health resource and primary enforcement body under the Smoke Free Ontario Act, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit wants to encourage those who do smoke or know someone who smokes to take this time and consider the benefits of quitting. In addition to ensuring compliance of the legislation, the Health Unit is offering a number of cessation resources for workplaces with employees who are interested in quitting.
