Workplaces
On May 31, 2006 the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (SFOA) will take effect making the entire province 100% smoke-free in all enclosed workplaces and public places.
Employers, proprietors, and owners are required to give notice to each person who enters their space where smoking is prohibited, post prescribed no-smoking signage throughout the enclosed place or area (including washrooms), ensure that no ashtrays or similar equipment remain, and finally to ensure that a person who refuses to comply does not remain on the premise. For employees and the public who frequent these places, the SFOA requires that we do not smoke in prohibited areas. Outdoor smoking shelters are permitted but are limited to consist of no more than two walls and a roof to allow for the free flow of air. Employers, owners or proprietors are responsible to ensure that these structures are compliant with the regulations by May 31, 2006.
